A vestibular physiotherapist specializes in treating people who experience dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, or difficulty focusing their eyes. They work with the vestibular system the balance system inside the inner ear.
What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehabilitation (VRT) is a specialized type of physiotherapy designed to help people
who experience dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, or trouble focusing their eyes.
The vestibular system is the balance system inside your inner ear. When this system is not
working properly, daily activities can feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
VRT uses targeted exercises to help reduce:
- dizziness and vertigo
- difficulty keeping your eyes steady
- imbalance or unsteadiness
- risk of falls
Even though the inner ear itself rarely fully heals, the brain can learn to adapt. This natural
process, called compensation, allows your other senses (vision and body awareness) to take over and restore stability. Vestibular rehabilitation helps guide this process safely and effectively.
Who Provides the Care?
Vestibular rehabilitation at our clinic is provided by Roly, a Certified Vestibular Therapist
through Emory University in Atlanta.
Your First Visit: What to Expect
Your initial vestibular assessment is about 55 minutes. It includes screening tests, a detailed evaluation of your eye and balance systems, and assessment with infra-red goggles to track eye movements during gentle head and body motions.
Please note: we do not perform VEMPs or caloric testing.
It’s normal to feel a bit dizzy or nauseous during the assessment—these symptoms are temporary. If you’re sensitive to motion, you may want to plan extra time before driving home.
Treatment & Follow-Up
Some conditions, such as positional vertigo, can often be treated during the first visit. Most vestibular conditions require a customized home exercise program and follow-up appointments every 1–2 weeks.
Most patients need 4–10 visits, depending on their diagnosis and how quickly they progress.
Our goal is to help you feel steadier, safer, and more confident in your daily activities.
